UK contactless limit could be raised to £100

The upper limit on contactless payments could be increased to £100. You can currently touch and pay with Contactless for amounts up to £45 without entering a PIN.

It is thought the increase would help reduce the spread of covid-19 by limiting the need to touch surfaces. In April 2020 the upper limit was moved from £30 to £45 in response to the pandemic.  The move could mean more convenience for shoppers in a step away from the European Commission’s rules although the Financial Conduct Authority would need to approve the change.

According to The Times the idea was initially raised to the Treasury by UK Finance, a City lobby group, who joined with card service providers to highlight the need for the limit increase.
