B&Q has announced the integration of two electric HGVs (heavy-goods vehicles) into its home delivery fleet, with a third set to join in early 2025. This initiative is a significant milestone in the retailer’s commitment to sustainable home deliveries and reducing environmental impact. Plans are also in place to add smaller electric vans for local deliveries in the new year.

These electric HGVs will support B&Q’s nationwide Home Delivery Network, including its Showroom services, which manage larger deliveries such as kitchens and bedrooms. Each truck is expected to complete 12-14 deliveries daily, improving logistics while cutting emissions.

Supporting Zero Emission Goals

This fleet expansion aligns with the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires 10% of new van sales to be zero-emissions in 2024, increasing to 70% by 2030 and 100% by 2035. It also contributes to B&Q’s broader sustainability objective of achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040, as outlined in its Build A Life Report.

B&Q Sustainable Fleet Expansion

The addition of electric HGVs enhances B&Q’s existing sustainable logistics practices, which include operating the country’s second-largest Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) fleet. The company plans to further expand its electric fleet in 2025, strengthening its green delivery credentials.

Innovative Delivery Solutions

In tandem with fleet upgrades, B&Q is exploring new delivery technologies. Trials in Milton Keynes with DPD UK employ autonomous robots for home deliveries, while a partnership with Deliveroo ensures fast delivery of select items within 25 minutes, offering both speed and environmental benefits.

Amélie Gallichan-Todd, B&Q’s Supply & Logistics Director, remarked:
“We’re working hard to improve our fulfilment services to give our customers more choice of when and how their B&Q purchases are delivered. Our aim is to give customers more choice of speed and location whilst, at the same time, fulfilling our commitment to reduce our impact on the environment, and the introduction of these electric trucks into our fleet is another step towards our transition to alternative fuels.”
