Co-op has launched its first new store of 2025 in Salford Quays, kicking off an ambitious year of convenience growth for the retailer. The new store, located on the ground floor of Anchorage Gateway—a 29-storey residential development—is strategically positioned near the area’s media, education, and cultural hubs.
The Salford Quays store is the first of up to 75 new Co-op locations planned for 2025. These will include both company-owned and franchise stores, complemented by 80 planned refurbishments to modernise existing locations. The initiative aims to enhance Co-op’s presence as a leading convenience retailer while delivering value to member-owners and their communities.
A Convenient and Sustainable Shopping Experience
The new Salford Quays store offers an extensive selection of fresh and healthy produce, food-to-go options, Fairtrade products, an in-store bakery, and hot food. Additionally, shoppers can access award-winning wines and 100% British fresh meat, which is also used in ready meals, pies, and sandwiches.
Member-owners benefit from additional value with lower prices on frequently purchased items. Services at the store include a Costa Coffee Express machine, PayPoint facilities for payment services, and an InPost locker for parcel collection and returns.
In line with Co-op’s sustainability goals, the store features a soft plastic recycling station for materials such as crisp packets, bread bags, and pet food pouches.
Embracing Quick Commerce
The Salford Quays store will act as a hub for Co-op’s quick commerce operations, enabling rapid delivery of groceries through partnerships with Just Eat, Uber Eats, and Deliveroo. Orders will be picked fresh from the store and delivered to homes and offices locally, ensuring convenience for customers.
Rachel Hargreaves, Director of Property, Development and Estates at Co-op, highlighted the strategic importance of the store:
“I am delighted to see Co-op’s first new store of 2025 launch. We are working to acquire new retail space, both freehold and leasehold, and to maximise the potential of our existing estate as part of our convenience growth ambitions.
“Our stores are designed to be a destination locally, a community hub combining great quality products, value, deals and ethical retailing with quick online delivery services, community participation and additional customer services. We have a clear focus on growing our convenience business and enhancing the value we create and deliver for our member-owners and their communities.”
Supporting the Salford Quays Community
The Salford Quays store will operate daily from 7am to 10pm, catering to local residents, office workers, and visitors to the area. Simon Williams, Store Manager at Co-op Salford Quays, shared his excitement:
“The whole team is excited to launch Co-op’s newest store, and Co-op’s first new store of the year. We pride ourselves on being able to deliver the quality, choice, added services, and value which can be enjoyed by everyone, and we are really looking forward to welcoming residents, office workers, and those visiting Salford Quays and all that it has to offer into Co-op’s new store. We’re here to contribute to local life and conveniently serve and support our community.”
Building on Previous Success
Co-op already has a strong presence in Salford Quays, with stores in Media City, which opened in 2022, and Clippers Quay. The Anchorage Gateway location builds on this success, further strengthening Co-op’s position as a key convenience retailer in the area.
