2023 stands as a year of significant achievement for Gloucester Quays, an urban outlet located in the South West. The outlet, under the management of Peel L&P, has reported record levels of leasing activity, accompanied by a notable increase in both footfall and sales. This growth trajectory has been influenced in part by the introduction of several high-profile international brands.
Comparative figures from 2023 showcase a 5.5% increase in footfall and a 6.5% rise in sales over the previous year. This surge is partly attributed to the arrival of globally recognized brands such as PUMA, Timberland, and NEXT, which have contributed to the outlet’s appeal. These additions, along with Gloucester Quays’ diverse mix of leisure and retail offerings and a full calendar of consumer-focused events, have played a significant role in attracting visitors.
The outlet’s leasing achievements have been a key factor in driving demand and enhancing the overall visitor experience, complemented by an impressive events program. Notably, December 2023 saw a 9.1% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same month in 2022. This period, particularly ahead of Christmas, witnessed a rise in both retail and food & beverage (F&B) spending. November and December combined saw sales climb considerably, with retail and F&B spending increasing by 10.4% and 10.5%, respectively. These figures indicate a trend towards early Christmas shopping and increased socializing as the holiday approached.
Paul Carter, Asset Director at Peel L&P, reflected on the year’s success: “2023 was a milestone year for Gloucester Quays, and we are extremely proud of the outlet’s continued success: the record-breaking figures speak for themselves. The outlet continues to establish itself as a unique, industry-leading, all-day destination where both locals and new visitors alike want to spend meaningful time. Tracking these numbers really helps us understand who our visitors are and their motivations, and the way retail and F&B spend grew in November and December paints a great picture, something we will use to ensure we are consistently delivering a quality, tailored experience and tenant mix. We look forward to maintaining this momentum into 2024, upholding Gloucester Quays’ consistently engaging and diverse outlet offer.”
In its commitment to sustainability, Peel L&P has also made significant strides at Gloucester Quays. In 2023, the outlet achieved the distinction of being the first shopping-led destination in the UK to be awarded the UKGBC’s ‘Net Zero Carbon – Operational Energy’ accreditation. This commitment to environmental responsibility was further underscored by receiving a 3* GRESB award, highlighting the outlet’s focus on sustainable practices.
