Morleys Stores has announced plans to reopen the historic Jollys department store on Milsom Street, Bath, bringing a revitalised shopping experience to the city. The move is seen as a boost for Bath’s retail sector, reinforcing investment in the high street at a time of industry challenges.

The company, which operates eight department stores across the UK, is committed to restoring Jollys to its former status as a retail landmark. The store will offer a curated selection of fashion, beauty, and homeware, catering to both local residents and visitors.

Preserving Heritage While Modernising Retail

Morleys will work with Bath & North East Somerset Council to refurbish the historic building, ensuring that Jollys maintains its architectural legacy while creating a modern shopping environment. The store will reopen in two phases, with an initial launch in March 2026, followed by a grand opening in October 2026 ahead of the peak shopping season.

Allan Winstanley, chief executive of Morleys Department Stores, said:

“We are thrilled to be bringing Jollys back to life and to be part of the vibrant retail landscape in Bath. Our approach is to treat each of our stores as a unique independent department store, ensuring we create an exceptional shopping experience tailored to the local community. We are especially pleased to confirm that we will be keeping the Jollys name, honouring its deep-rooted legacy in the city.”

A Unique Shopping Experience for Bath

Jollys will introduce exclusive brands not previously available in Bath, alongside a full-service beauty department and a dedicated food and beverage offering. The goal is to position Jollys as an aspirational shopping destination, complementing the city’s historic charm.

The reopening has been welcomed by local authorities, with Councillor Kevin Guy, leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, stating:

“Morleys Stores will bring an exciting shopping experience to residents and visitors alike, and I am delighted to welcome the business to our vibrant city. Milsom Street has always been a very special shopping destination, and Morleys’ decision complements the investment the council is making in the Milsom Quarter.”

Celebrating Jollys’ History with a Heritage Space

As part of the renovation, a dedicated Heritage Space will be introduced within Jollys, overseen by former Jollys store manager, Jess Merritt-John. This space will showcase the history of the store, provide updates on the refurbishment, and engage with the local community.

Councillor Mark Elliott, cabinet member for Resources, highlighted the significance of the investment:

“We set out the council’s commitment to the local economy in our ten-year Economic Strategy, and this investment is a very positive recognition of the great retail offer our city has and the work the council has undertaken to support it.”

Continued Investment in Retail Growth

Morleys has been actively expanding and modernising its estate, with recent investments including:

  • A £3 million refurbishment of Morleys in Brixton in 2022
  • A new 20,000 sq. ft home store in Newbury (April 2024)
  • A planned £3 million upgrade for Pearsons in Enfield in 2025

The reopening of Jollys marks another key step in Morleys’ long-term strategy, demonstrating confidence in the future of physical retail and its role in strengthening high streets.
