Newcastle Building Society has revealed plans to open a new branch in an iconic Newcastle location, with a multi-million pound investment in the city centre.

The Society has agreed terms to move into the former French Connection retail unit at Monument as part of an ongoing commitment to grow its high street presence and increase access to financial services in communities across the region.

The Monument Community Branch will become the Society’s largest, moving from its current Northumberland Street location. The switch to a bigger and better new premises bucks the national trend of bank branch closures, putting accessible financial services at the heart of its home city.

Andrew Haigh, chief executive at Newcastle Building Society, said: “The move to our new city centre community branch is a monumental step in the ongoing delivery of our innovative branch model and will supercharge our presence at the very heart of the city. As banks continue to close branches across the region, we’re proud to be able to call such an iconic location our new city centre home. This new branch is part of a region-wide, multi-million pound investment that demonstrates our intent to provide our communities with welcoming and inclusive branches offering expert guidance, advice, and support for all.”

Work on Newcastle Building Society’s Monument Community Branch will start in the next few weeks and is expected to take several months, with a planned opening date of early Summer 2024. The Society will be engaging with its existing customers to ensure a smooth transition from its current Northumberland Street branch, which will close when the new Monument Community Branch opens.
