In its landmark 30th year, Lidl GB is unveiling ambitious plans to open hundreds of new stores across the UK, a move set to create thousands of new jobs. This announcement follows a year of significant investment aimed at strengthening its operations infrastructure.

Key developments over the past year include the opening of Lidl’s largest global warehouse in Luton, an extension of its Welsh distribution centre in Bridgend, and notable advancements in the expansion of its Belvedere warehouse, which is expected to double in size and capacity upon completion. Additionally, Lidl has introduced various enhancements across its store network, such as the rollout of electronic shelf labels, contributing to a record growth in market share, now standing at 8%.

As the fastest growing bricks and mortar supermarket for the past seven months, Lidl is reinforcing its mission to make good food accessible to all. The new stores will expand Lidl’s reach to thousands more households across the country and are expected to increase its market share further.

In the upcoming months, Lidl plans to welcome customers to new locations in several areas, including Bristol, Birmingham, Berwick, and notably in London—where it is now the third largest supermarket. New London stores are set to open in Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton, and Canning Town.

The latest expansion drive is part of Lidl’s ongoing strategy to target growth in major cities like Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, and London, as well as in towns such as Woking, Wadebridge, Dumfries, and Didcot.

Richard Taylor, Lidl GB’s Chief Development Officer, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion:

“Having fortified our infrastructure with significant investments like Luton, which is the largest warehouse in the Lidl world, we’re proud to have achieved record market share this month. We have also been the fastest growing bricks and mortar supermarket for the past seven months in a row. With an exceptional store network and our laser focus on operational excellence, we’re welcoming more customers through our doors than ever before, which positions us perfectly for continued expansion.”

“As we celebrate our 30th year, our commitment to ensuring that all households across the country have access to high quality produce at affordable prices is stronger than ever. We’re planning to open hundreds of new Lidl stores but ultimately see no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. This is why we’re continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion. As we look ahead, we’re excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we’re planning to open across the country in the coming months and years.”

Lidl is actively seeking sites for new stores, offering finders’ fees for successful site identifications. The company is looking for prominent locations that can support standalone stores or mixed-use schemes, with sufficient space for large store units and ample parking.
