JYSK, the Danish home furnishing chain, is set to mark a historic milestone on Saturday 22 March 2025, with the opening of its first store in Uruguay. Located in Canelones, just north of Montevideo, the store represents not only JYSK’s expansion into a new country but also its first venture into South America.

The store will be operated by Antelo Group, a local franchisee, as part of JYSK’s international franchise business. With this latest opening, JYSK Franchise is now present in 21 countries, while Uruguay becomes the 49th country in JYSK’s global store network.

A Strategic Expansion into South America

Uruguay’s political and economic stability played a key role in JYSK’s decision to enter the market. The country’s population is largely concentrated in the southern coastal region, making Montevideo and its surrounding areas an ideal starting point.

“I cannot wait to get started with our opening in Uruguay, which is an interesting market. I am really looking forward to the opening — it is always a unique event no matter where it happens, and I especially look forward to meeting and seeing the customers’ reactions to JYSK. Uruguay is a country with political and economic stability, and we have found a very good franchisee in Antelo Group, whom we look forward to collaborating with,” says JYSK Franchise Director, Frederik Kroun.

Looking Ahead: Plans for Further Expansion

The Montevideo store opening is just the beginning, as JYSK already has plans for further expansion in Uruguay.

“We are already looking into where store number two could be located, and we expect it will also be in the greater Montevideo area, though the final decision has not been made yet. From here, we will evaluate our openings and consider where we can further expand,” adds Kroun.

JYSK’s franchise model has been instrumental in its international growth since launching its first franchise store in 1984—the same year it expanded into Germany. Today, JYSK Franchise operates across diverse markets, including Canada, Latvia, and Vietnam, demonstrating its ability to adapt to various retail landscapes worldwide.
