JD Sports is opening its new 13,000 sq ft store in Stockport’s Merseyway shopping centre on Thursday, 3rd October. The new store, located in the refurbished former BHS building, will feature a modern design, offering customers access to top brands in sport and streetwear, including Nike, Adidas, The North Face, Under Armour, Berghaus, Jordan, and Puma.
This opening follows closely behind the launch of a 9,000 sq ft Poundland store in the same building last month. The space has undergone significant refurbishment to become a state-of-the-art retail destination, enhancing Merseyway’s retail offering.
The new, larger JD store replaces the retailer’s two existing locations within Stockport town centre and will also create 10 additional jobs.
Stockport’s Revitalisation Continues
Cllr Colin MacAlister, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, expressed excitement over the opening, stating: “It’s fantastic to see the transformation of the old BHS building with the opening of JD and the recent opening of Poundland. This is a big step forward in our long-term plans for Merseyway, showing how we’re rethinking the use of these spaces to bring new life into the town centre. With many department stores closing nationally, it’s about more than just retail now – we’re thinking outside the box to create places that inspire creativity and innovation.”
He continued to highlight ongoing developments in Stockport’s town centre, including new initiatives like the Merseyway Innovation Centre and the upcoming Stockroom project. These ventures, alongside community-focused events such as Stockport Spectacular, are helping to make Stockport an attractive destination for visitors, residents, and businesses alike. “The fact that we’re still attracting big-name retailers, even in challenging times, says a lot about the positive momentum here. Stockport has started to shine, and Merseyway is right at the heart of that,” he added.
High-Quality Retail in the Heart of Stockport
Victoria Nichol, Merseyway Centre Manager, shared her enthusiasm for the new JD store, saying: “The opening of the new JD store is testament to our ongoing commitment to ensure high-quality retail at the centre. It’s a well-loved brand in the town, and we’re confident our visitors will be impressed by their new store, which will offer a fantastic shopping experience.”
James Air, Director and Head of Group Acquisitions at JD, also expressed excitement about the new store: “We can’t wait to open our brand-new store at Merseyway. We’ve always had a great connection with Stockport and the North West and are pleased to be investing in a large, state-of-the-art store with an enhanced product range. We’re very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to our new store.”
Grand Opening Celebrations
To mark the grand opening, JD has planned special activities for shoppers. On Friday, 4th October, visitors can enjoy live DJ sets while browsing the new store. Over the weekend of 5th and 6th October, customers will have the chance to take part in the Batak Challenge, a high-energy game testing reflexes and hand-eye coordination. Prizes will be awarded to those who top the leaderboard during the challenge.
The opening of JD Sports at Merseyway is part of Stockport’s wider regeneration efforts. Retail consultants Barker Proudlove have supported Stockport Council in securing both JD Sports and Poundland for the revitalised shopping centre.
