Lidl GB is giving customers the opportunity to decide how £500,000 of funding is allocated to local charities through a new voting function in the Lidl Plus app.

From Thursday 24 September, customers will be able to open a dedicated banner on the Lidl Plus app home page, select their region and vote for one of five shortlisted local causes.

All five charities featured within each region are guaranteed to receive funding. The cause ranked first following the customer vote will receive £10,000, with £5,000 allocated to second place and £3,000 to third. The charities finishing fourth and fifth will each receive £1,000.

Voting will remain open for two weeks, after which Lidl Plus will display the final donation results for each community. The initiative extends the retailer’s use of customer-facing digital giving, following earlier activity including the introduction of digital micro-donations in support of the NSPCC.

Funding Based on Local Need

The five participating causes in each area have been shortlisted according to local deprivation needs. The selection process uses the Neighbourly Pulse tool, which brings together local community and deprivation data to help identify areas and organisations requiring support.

Lidl GB is the first retailer to adopt Pulse and is using the tool as part of its localised giving partnership with Neighbourly. The approach follows other initiatives in which Lidl has used localised deprivation data to target community activity.

“For the first time, Lidl is putting the power of giving directly into the hands of our customers, offering a simple way to support the local causes that matter most to them. By working closely with Neighbourly to identify local needs, we are ensuring this £500,000 fund makes a targeted, meaningful difference to communities across the country, building on the £2.8 million in community investment Lidl has donated since 2020.”

Louise Weise
Chief Customer Officer at Lidl GB

“We are thrilled to partner with Lidl GB on this innovative customer voting campaign. Local charities are facing unprecedented demand, and Lidl’s regional approach ensures that funding is directed precisely where it is needed most, based on localised insights and deprivation data. By vetting and supporting these incredible local causes, we are proud to help Lidl customers make an immediate, positive impact right on their doorsteps.”

CEO of Neighbourly

Local charities can also register with Neighbourly to be considered for surplus food donations and future grant opportunities. The Lidl Plus voting period begins on 24 September and will run for two weeks.
