Discount retailer Poundland today revealed new technology had gone live at Poundland.co.uk that would allow shoppers to experience the aroma of its all-new fragrance ranges for the first time.

Powered by an AI algorithm, each of the fragrances in Poundland’s ranges have been digitised so they can be experienced by the online shopper by a simple click and sniff.

but only 100 million of those molecules have been identified to date and their new AI model is analysing data to help identify currently unknown scents.

The click and sniff technology ensures online shoppers can have the same interaction with their favourite fragrances as they would in store.

The new fragrance ranges take inspiration from high end expensive fashion houses that are available both online and instore include:

  • The Scentalis ladies fragrances Parisian Chic, Miss Conduct, Red Petals, Pink Crush, Summer Goddess, White Light and Define Me all available at £4 each for 100ml

The new click and sniff service can be accessed from 00:01 on 1 April 2024 at https://www.poundland.co.uk/health-and-beauty/fragrances

When adding a fragrance to an online basket, the selection triggers a digitised ‘Loop-Lafri signal from Poundland.co.uk’s AI database that causes a phone or PC’s processor to generate a personalised scent that correlates with the molecular bouquet triggered in the nose.

The new technology, being trialled for today only (1 April) will be rolled out to other product ranges such as confectionery, bread and cakes, should customers react positively.

Poundland.co.uk’s Tom Hill was thrilled to be launching the tech.

“In just a few short months we’ve put thousands of Poundland customers’ favourite items online for home delivery – and our new click and sniff opens up a whole new opportunity for us to replicate the in-store experience online.

“Our fragrance ranges are well known for being incredible value with similar scents to the big brands.  We’re now letting customers experience that for themselves.”

In the last five years Poundland has undertaken a range revolution in its stores, adding whole new categories such as clothing, homewares, and chilled & frozen food giving customers an alternative to supermarkets.

It has transformed its chilled and frozen offer – now in over half its estate – through the acquisition and successful integration of Fultons Frozen Foods.

It has completed the transition to all-new clothing ranges powered by parent company Pepco Group, bringing its family fashion offer to 560 stores across the UK and Ireland including more baby and kidswear than ever before.

And through ‘Project One’ it is now revolutionising its general merchandise offer across all its stores.  Again powered by parent company Pepco, Poundland is undertaking the biggest step-change in its GM categories in its 30-plus year history

In he last 18 months it’s also turned its attention to a similar online transformation, enabling Poundland to now launch its own online offer powered by its new digital fulfilment hub in Darton, South Yorkshire, one of four DCs in its estate alongside Wigan, Harlow and Bilston.
