IKEA has announced the opening of its new pop-up experience, Hus of FRAKTA, dedicated to the brand’s iconic blue FRAKTA bag. The pop-up will launch on Thursday, 28th November, at 216 Oxford Street, adjacent to the future flagship IKEA store, set to open in 2025.

The FRAKTA bag, a staple in IKEA’s product range, was introduced over three decades ago to assist customers with carrying their purchases. Over the years, it has become a cultural symbol of practicality and adaptability, often repurposed by users for various everyday tasks. From serving as a laundry basket to being used as a beach bag or a convenient carrier for commuters, the FRAKTA embodies versatility.

Paying Tribute to a Design Icon

Designed with IKEA’s democratic principles—function, form, quality, sustainability, and affordability—the FRAKTA bag remains affordable at just 75p. Its longevity in UK households is notable, with 45% of homes owning at least one FRAKTA bag and 31% retaining it for over five years.

Highlighting the bag’s cultural and practical significance, Matt Gould, IKEA London City Store Manager, stated:

“As we prepare for our Oxford Street city store opening next year, we’re excited to showcase the unique offerings we’ll bring to this iconic location. When we open our doors, customers will discover well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices that make them accessible to as many people as possible. There’s no better product to demonstrate this commitment than our FRAKTA bag with its small, 75p price tag. A staple in our range for over 30 years, and in so many households, we wanted to pay tribute to this household favourite, and bring IKEA a little closer to our customers before next spring’s opening.”

The FRAKTA bag has also inspired collaborations with renowned designers such as Zandra Rhodes and Marimekko, further cementing its place as an enduring design icon.
