Lidl is kicking off the new year with an ambitious expansion, opening nine new stores in just one month. With locations launching across the UK, this growth brings hundreds of new jobs and increases access to Lidl’s award-winning combination of high-quality and affordable products.

New and expanded Lidl stores across the UK

The expansion includes brand-new Lidl stores in Canning Town, Preston, Walsall, and Wombourne, giving more communities access to the supermarket’s low prices and fresh produce. Additionally, five existing locations will reopen following significant investment and expansion, with larger, upgraded spaces in Blantyre, Cwmbran, Oldbrook, Wells, and West Ealing.

This latest round of openings follows the launch of Lidl’s first new store of 2025 in Northampton. It also builds on momentum from ten store openings in late 2024, which included Bovey Tracey, Hemel Hempstead, and Ipswich.

Economic boost and job creation

Lidl’s expansion is delivering a substantial economic boost, generating hundreds of new roles across the country. Employees will benefit from industry-leading maternity and adoption leave, enhanced holiday entitlement, and in-store discounts.

Richard Taylor, chief development officer at Lidl GB, highlighted the significance of this expansion, stating, “As we begin the new year, we’re maintaining our momentum and opening nine state-of-the-art stores, delivering bigger and better shopping experiences to new communities and those we’ve proudly served for an average of 26 years. After a record-breaking Christmas, where millions of households turned to Lidl, these openings reflect the growing demand for our unbeatable value and quality. This is just the start – we’ve got more openings in the pipeline this year alone and can’t wait to welcome even more customers, both loyal and new, through our doors in the weeks ahead.”

Lidl’s record-breaking growth

This expansion follows Lidl’s most successful Christmas yet, with nearly two million more customers shopping at the discounter compared to previous years. Sales during the festive season rose 7% year-on-year, surpassing £1 billion for the first time. Lidl has also remained the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar supermarket for over a year, reinforcing its strong position in the UK grocery market.

With more store openings planned throughout 2025, Lidl continues its expansion strategy, ensuring even more customers across the UK can access its affordable groceries and fresh produce.
