Galeries Lafayette, the French department store group, will open its inaugural Indian flagship in early November, occupying the historic Turner Morrison and Voltas House buildings in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda district. The development stems from a partnership established in 2022 with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL), a subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group.

The initiative is aimed at tapping into India’s growing luxury market, which is projected to reach USD 85 billion by 2030. Mumbai, identified as a primary contributor to this expansion, has been chosen as the location for Galeries Lafayette’s entry into the country.

“This partnership with Galeries Lafayette marks a coming of age moment for Indian luxury retail,” said Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group. “Together, we are creating an iconic destination in the heart of Mumbai, a world class showcase where the best of global luxury engages with the rising confidence of the Indian consumer.”

Galeries Lafayette, which operates 65 stores worldwide, brings to India its 130 year legacy in fashion and experience driven retail. Nicolas Houzé, Executive Chairman of Galeries Lafayette Group, said, “Partnering with the Aditya Birla Group, a renowned family owned conglomerate whose values resonate with ours, gives this project a particularly strong foundation. This flagship will stand as a symbol of our ambition to make the French Art of Living shine on the global stage.”

Designed by London based architectural firm Virgile + Partners Kubj, the 90,000 sq ft store spans five levels and is intended to blend Parisian aesthetic sensibilities with Mumbai’s architectural heritage. The location will feature over 250 international luxury and designer brands.

Additional offerings include personal styling services, private lounges, concierge amenities, and cultural programming designed to drive customer engagement. These features are expected to enhance loyalty and support ABFRL’s expansion in luxury retail.

Ashish Dikshit, Managing Director of ABFRL, commented, “Galeries Lafayette ushers in a new paradigm of luxury for India, one that goes beyond retail to create cultural experiences. Our aim is to further elevate this trajectory, amplifying India’s influence and visibility in the world of luxury.”

To mark the forthcoming launch, a symbolic event was held on the Arabian Sea, where guests, including Birla and Houzé, were ferried from the Gateway of India aboard yachts to a curated evening celebration.

The project received strategic counsel from advisory firm Pike Preston to align with international retail standards while adapting to Indian market conditions.

The Galeries Lafayette flagship will officially open next month at Turner Morrison Building, 16 G Vaidya Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort, Mumbai.
