New research by YourSurprise has ranked Belgium’s provinces and regions by their Pink Score, a measure of where girl births are highest relative to boys. The study analysed average birth figures for boys and girls across all 10 Belgian provinces and 3 regions, drawn from official Statbel data. “The ratio of girl births to boy births varies remarkably from province to province in Belgium. Namur and Liège consistently record more girl births than boy births, while Limburg shows the opposite pattern. These demographic differences are stable across multiple years and reflect a clear geographic pattern in Belgian birth statistics.”

Methodology
The study analysed official Statbel birth figures for all 10 Belgian provinces and 3 regions over the period 2022 to 2024. For each province and region, the average number of boy and girl births per year was calculated based on the three most recent available years. The average number of girl births per 1,000 boys was then established for each province.
Based on these ratios, each province received a Pink Score from 0 to 100. The province with the lowest ratio of girls per 1,000 boys received a score of 0 (Limburg) and the province with the highest ratio received a score of 100 (Namur). All other provinces were scaled linearly between these two extremes. The same method was applied for the regional comparison, with Wallonia receiving a score of 0 and the Brussels Region receiving a score of 100.
