IKEA has today opened a seagull-proof ‘chip theft insurance kiosk’ at Brighton i360, offering free chips to locals and visitors as compensation for meals disrupted by the city’s well-known seaside birds. The temporary kiosk will operate on 9 and 10 August, ahead of the launch of the retailer’s new Brighton store.
From midday, visitors can claim a free portion of chips by signing a ‘chip theft insurance form’ and registering for IKEA Family, the brand’s free membership programme, which offers exclusive rewards, discounts, and benefits. Existing members are also eligible to take part. Chips will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with one portion per person while stocks last.

The initiative is timed to precede the opening of IKEA Brighton in Churchill Square on Thursday 14 August. The new store will feature the IKEA Swedish Deli, serving a range of dishes including chips, meatballs, and other Swedish-inspired menu items. Diners will also be able to enjoy sea views from the restaurant.
Karina Gilpin, Market Manager at IKEA Brighton, said: “We’re excited to move into our new Brighton home next Thursday, and to celebrate we’re embracing Brighton’s most infamous neighbours – its seagulls. Our chip theft insurance kiosk will offer Brightonians some tasty chips and a unique dining experience before our doors officially open!”

The store will open at 10am on 14 August, following the closure of the current IKEA pop-up inside Churchill Square on 10 August. Opening hours for the new site will be 10am–8pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am–5pm on Sundays.
IKEA’s chip theft insurance kiosk will be open 12-6pm on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August, chips are offered on a first come first served basis and are limited to one portion per person, whilst stocks last.
