Poundland plans to open two more of its “Poundland Local” stores as it extends the pilot scheme to bring convenience shopping to neighbourhoods it does not currently serve.

Smaller than a typical Poundland, the compact Poundland Local stores have been designed to bring convenience shopping to areas not currently served by Poundland.

They will bring Poundland’s products to local residents and commuters who work in the area, offering customers a carefully selected range of products, whether they are buying lunch, doing a planned top-up shop or making an urgent last-minute buy.

The next Poundland Local store to open will be its first in London. It opens on Saturday 2 July at Unit 4B, the Junction Centre, St John’s Hill, Clapham Junction, London SW11 1RU.

The new Clapham Junction store will be its first at a high traffic transport hub and will be designed so customers can check-out quickly and easily.

That will be followed this summer by the first Poundland Local store in the West Midlands, at 37 Boldmere Road, Sutton Coldfield B73 5UY.

Poundland Local stores typically employ around 12 colleagues. The new stores will offer items from Poundland’s core range including groceries, snacks, household products, health and beauty and batteries.

Customers will also find items they would expect in a convenience store including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen food, bread and morning goods, hot pies and pastries, nappies and formula milk, beers, wines and spirits.

Poundland transformation and retail director, Austin Cooke, said: “Each of the new stores will have a range of items tailored to suit the needs of customers in each neighbourhood, whether they live or work locally.

“In the current economic climate, people are carefully watching how much they spend, and we want them to know that convenience shopping does not have to mean they compromise on value for money.”

The Poundland Local format was unveiled in May 2021, with four convenience stores in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. Under the pilot scheme, Poundland is actively looking for other suitable locations particularly inside the M25 where Poundland Local stores can bring convenience shopping to communities.
