River Island has unveiled a new store concept at centre:mk in Milton Keynes, introducing a refreshed format that combines visual merchandising, an expanded denim offer and new in-store technology.

The 12,800 sq ft store spans two floors and has been redesigned around a more customer-focused shopping journey. River Island intends to roll the concept out more widely across its store estate.

A New Visual Identity for the Store

The exterior has been updated to create a stronger arrival, while the interior introduces the retailer’s new River-Runway installation. The visual feature presents runway-inspired looks and current trends, providing a focal point for seasonal merchandising.

A dedicated denim department offers a wider selection of silhouettes and washes. Elsewhere, modernised fitting rooms and a revised layout are intended to make the store easier to navigate.

RFID Checkouts and Smart Fitting Rooms

Technology forms a central part of the concept. Weight-sensing self-service checkouts use radio-frequency identification technology, allowing products to be recognised at the till. Smart Fitting Rooms enable customers to request alternative sizes and products without leaving the cubicle.

The combination of RFID-assisted checkout and fitting-room service technology extends River Island’s wider investment in digital tools within physical retail, while keeping the customer-facing experience centred on product presentation and service.

“The debut of River Island’s new concept store at centre:mk brings something fresh to the destination’s existing quality line up of fashion retailers. Our wide catchment values quality concepts, and we’re delighted that centre:mk can be the first to bring this new concept to market. It really affirms the scheme’s position as a best-in-retail destination”

Kevin Duffy, Centre Director at centre:mk

“Debuting our new store concept to centre:mk represents an important step change in River Island’s bricks-and-mortar presence. The top 10 prime regional destination offers a wealth of quality fashion retailers, a highly engaged and loyal customer base and clear ambition to deliver quality experiences, all of which perfectly mirror River Island’s approach and new store concept. We are excited to reveal our enhanced store offering to our customers and look forward to expanding this vision further.”

Mel Aucott, Retail Director at River Island

The reinvestment follows other recent leasing activity at centre:mk, including KENJI’s planned regional debut on Silbury Arcade and Lindt’s signing for a 1,670 sq ft boutique at the destination.
