Music and pop culture retailer hmv has announced plans to open a new shop in Amsterdam next year, marking the company’s continued expansion in the Netherlands following a “hugely successful” debut in The Hague in November.

The new 4,500‑square‑foot store will be hmv’s second in the Dutch market and aims to offer fans of music, film, TV and literature “an unrivalled range of products”, alongside a broad selection of sought‑after pop culture collectables. The store will be located on Kalverstraat, one of Amsterdam’s most prominent shopping streets.

According to the retailer, the Amsterdam shop will feature a deeper selection of vinyl LPs and CDs than its counterpart in The Hague, along with a dedicated section focused on K‑Pop. Customers will also find an expanded assortment of films and collector’s box sets on 4K and Blu‑ray, as well as double the range of t‑shirts, collectables and books compared with the earlier Dutch location.

We’re constantly striving to create new community hubs for fans to come together and share their love of music and pop culture,” said Phil Halliday, Managing Director at hmv and Fopp. “The shop will cater to a range of interests, stocking all genres of music from K‑Pop to Heavy Metal, the best film and TV shows around, as well as a great selection of fiction, non‑fiction and graphic novels. We’re confident that we’ll bring something new to Kalverstraat and we can’t wait to open the doors next year.

hmv has a long heritage in music retail, having been founded in the UK in 1921 as a gramophone brand under the name His Master’s Voice, and opening its first dedicated store on London’s Oxford Street. In 2019, the business was acquired by Doug Putman, owner of Sunrise Records, and has since expanded to operate over 120 stores across the UK.

Today, hmv’s retail offering includes an expansive range of vinyl records, CDs and visual media, including DVD, Blu‑ray and 4K formats, along with popular culture merchandise, books, turntables and headphones. The brand’s continued focus on physical retail reflects an enduring demand for in‑store music and media experiences among collectors and casual fans alike.

By establishing a presence in Amsterdam, hmv is positioning itself to engage with a diverse audience of locals and international visitors. The move follows a broader trend of music retailers investing in destination stores that blend nostalgia, community and discovery, even as digital formats continue to dominate mainstream consumption.

The new Amsterdam store is expected to open in 2026, with hmv set to announce specific dates and further details closer to launch.
