Lidl GB is introducing a fruit and vegetable scavenger hunt to its child-sized trolleys as part of a trial across 100 selected stores from mid-July.
Lidl GB said the participating stores have been selected using localised indices of deprivation, with the initiative intended to reach communities where it believes additional educational support is most needed.

Recyclable tags will be securely attached to children’s trolleys, encouraging young shoppers to identify different types of fruit and vegetables as they move through the store.
Clues include “Mini Trees”, described as being green and loving rain to help them grow, and “Orange Sticks”, which grow in the ground and are very crunchy.
Lidl Plus vouchers for free fruit and vegetable products will also be available in stores during the summer holidays to support the trial.
Extending the Lidl Foodies Programme
The in-store activity builds on Lidl Foodies, the discounter’s schools-based programme covering nutrition, the origins of fresh food and ways to encourage children to eat fruit and vegetables.
Now in its second year, the programme is present in more than 25% of British primary schools and has reached 640,000 children to date, according to Lidl.
Research cited by the retailer found that 52% of children aged eight to 11 believe pineapples grow on trees, while 28% are unsure where strawberries come from. A further 26% said that shopping for healthy foods would inspire them to try healthier options.
“Between the ‘I’m bored’ comments and tactical snack-grabs, we know that the weekly food shop can be tricky for families when little ones are in tow. That’s why we’re bringing the success of our Lidl Foodies schools initiative onto the shop floor to make learning fun and improve the shopping experience for families this summer. By turning our mini-trolleys into a fun yet educational Scavenger Hunt game, we can give our littlest shoppers a foodie adventure that encourages them to discover more about fruit and vegetables.”
